BLU – RAY – DISC (submitted by Chirag)

blu1.jpg

The Name

The Blu-ray name is a combination of “blue,” for the color of the laser that is used, and “ray,” for optical ray. The “e” in “blue” was purposefully left off, according to the manufacturers, because an everyday word cannot be trademarked.

Blu-Ray is the next iteration on the optical disc timeline. The Blu-Ray standard was established to hold a standard-length movie in HDTV format, or high-definition television. Such movies are displayed in significantly higher resolution and therefore they require much more storage space. A standard Blu-Ray disc holds 27GB (gigabytes) of information which is about 40 times the amount of data that a CD can hold.

The making of Microsoft’s first commercially available surface computerMay 2007

Beyond the Mouse and Keyboard, Surface computing is a major advancement that moves beyond the traditional user interface to a more natural way of interacting with digital content. Microsoft urface™, Microsoft Corp.’s first commercially available surface computer, breaks down the traditional barriers between people and technology to provide effortless interaction with all forms of digital content through natural gestures, touch and physical objects instead of a mouse and keyboard. Although customers will be able to interact with Surface in select restaurants, hotels, retail establishments and public entertainment venues by the end of the year, the product has been years in the making at Microsoft.
