Word of the Day(submitted by Ankita)

  • Bug — a fault in a computer program which prevents it from working correctly.

The term is often (but erroneously) credited to Grace Hopper. In 1946, she joined the Harvard Faculty at the Computation Laboratory where she traced an error in the Harvard Mark II to a moth trapped in a relay. This bug was carefully removed and taped to the log book.

However, use of the word “bug” to describe defects in mechanical systems dates back to at least the 1870s, perhaps especially in Scotland. Thomas Edison, for one, used the term in his notebooks.

MEMS

Short for micro-electromechanical systems, the name for a micro fabrication technology used in making systems-on-a-chip that embeds mechanical devices such as fluid sensors, mirrors, actuators, pressure and temperature sensors, vibration sensors. MEMS combine many disciplines, including physics, biochemistry, electrical engineering, optics and electronics.
Typical MEMS devices combine sensing, processing and/or actuating functions to alter the way that the physical world is perceived and controlled. They typically combine two or more electrical, mechanical, biological, magnetic, optical or chemical properties on a single microchip.

bluebugging

Bluebugging allows skilled individuals to access the mobile phone commands using Bluetooth wireless technology without notifying or alerting the phone’s user. This vulnerability allows the hacker to initiate phone calls, send and read SMS, read and write phonebook contacts, eavesdrop on phone conversations, and connect to the Internet. As with all the attacks, the hacker must be within a 10 meter range of the phone. This is a separate vulnerability from bluesnarfing and does not affect all of the same phones as bluesnarfing

OPERATING SYSTEM

OS stands for Operating System.  The operating system is the program which runs a computer. The operating system takes care of managing files and folders(such as renaming, moving, copying, and deleting files). It also provides you the ability to start the other software you have on your computer.  In addition, any modern operating system usually provides many APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that make it easy to write advanced programs without reinventing the wheel.  For example, any modern graphical operating system will include the ability for a program to create a button. Operating Systems also usually include many programs, such as a text editor, that are almost essential to have on every computer. Windows 98 Operating Systems also usually include many programs, such as a text editor, that are almost essential to have on every computer.

TELEPRESENCE

The term used to describe a set of technologies, such as high-definition audio, video and other interactive elements that enable people to feel or appear as if they were present in a location which they are not physically in.

LAN ADAPTER

An expansion board  that is used to connect a computer or computing device to a network. LAN adapter is the most common and generic alternate name for a Network Interface Card (NIC). However, many similar products, such as a Wireless USB LAN Adapter or a Wii LAN Adapter is also called a LAN adapter.

BLUESNARFING

Bluesnarfing allows hackers to gain access to data stored on a Bluetooth enabled phone using Bluetooth wireless technology without alerting the phones  user of the connection made to the device. The information that can be accessed in this manner includes the phonebook and associated images, calendar, and IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity).
